The Meaning of Witchcraft. Gerald Gardner. Wicca. Occult

The Meaning of Witchcraft. Gerald Gardner. Wicca. Occult
The Meaning of Witchcraft. Gerald Gardner. Wicca. Occult

I'm enjoying some of the newly reissued Occult books in the Weiser Classics series. "The Meaning of Witchcraft" by Gerald Gardner is an essential Wiccan text.

"Those of us who use the word witch with all of the pride and fortification that it offers us do so thanks to Gardner’s lucid, liberating vision.”—Pam Grossman, author of Waking the Witch: Reflections on Women, Magic, and Power

Often called the father of modern witchcraft, Gerald Gardner’s life and works were ground-breaking in opening the door for the modern revival of Wicca and neo-paganism. The Meaning of Witchcraft (originally published in 1959) was the first sympathetic book written from the point of view of a practicing witch.

“The foundation of magical beliefs,” Gardner wrote, “of which witchcraft is a form, is that unseen Powers exist, and that by performing the right sort of ritual, these Powers can be contacted and either forced or persuaded to assist one in some way. People believed this in the Stone Age, and they believe it, consciously or not, today. It is now well known that most superstition is, in fact, broken-down ritual. The meaning of witchcraft is to be found not in strange religious theories about God and Satan but in the deepest levels of the human mind, the collective unconscious, and the earliest developments of human society.”

The Meaning of Witchcraft is an enduring and invaluable source book for witches today. This Weiser Classics edition includes a new foreword by Pam Grossman, author of Waking the Witch. In it, Grossman revisits the historical role and mixed legacy that Gardner has played in the revival of witchcraft and magic in modern times.

Witchcraft Today. Gerald Gardner. Wicca. Occult. Magick

Witchcraft Today. Gerald Gardner. Wicca. Occult. Magick
Witchcraft Today. Gerald Gardner. Wicca. Occult. Magick

First published in 1954, "Witchcraft Today" was a landmark text that inspired a Revival. Written by Gerald Gardner, the Father of Wicca. Still an interesting read 70 years later.

An expanded edition of the quintessential Wiccan classic written by the father of the pagan renaissance.

First published in 1954, this landmark exploration of Wicca inspired a passionate revival of interest in indigenous British religion and led to the rebirth of a way of life. Encompassing an explanation of Wiccan rituals and tenents, as well as a comprehensive study of occult practices worldwide and throughout the ages, Witchcraft Today is a book that "belongs on the bookshelf of every Witch and every person . . . interested in the whole vast field of the occult" (Raymond Buckland, author of Wicca for Life).

This special expanded edition of the historic volume, reissued in celebration of its 50th anniversary, includes the original introduction written for the book by Dr. Margaret Murray, former president of the British Folklore Society and the author of influential books on Witchcraft. It also includes new material by contemporary practitioners and scholars:

- Judy Harrow, author of Wicca Covens and Devoted to You, discusses the context of Gardner's life and work and gives an analysis of his published sources as well as which later books carry on the major themes.
- Ronald Hutton, eminent historian and author of Triumph of the Moon, looks at Gardner's life and times.
- Wren Walker, coproducer of the Witches' Voice website, shares her observations about Wicca today.
- Graduate student Tara Nelson looks into the religion's possible future.

This audacious work is a must-read for anyone fascinated by the ancient practice of Witchcraft, or by its growing influence on contemporary culture, including references to the practice of Wicca on TV and in movies, and courses that teaches its principles in mainstream academic institutions. Combining an exploration of the often-secret past of Witches with a look at its current practice, Witchcraft Today is an essential tool to be used for study, reflection, inspiration, and transformative ideas.

The Grimoire of Lady Sheba. Book of Shadows. Wicca. Witchcraft

The Grimoire of Lady Sheba and the Book of Shadows it contains were controversial upon printing as it was the first published version of the Gardnerian Wiccan rituals.

Lady Sheba inherited her practice of witchcraft from more than four generations of Witches. Recognizing a profound need for a new understanding of the forces of nature, she elected to publish her grimoire, a personal magickal workbook copied by hand from the time of her initiation.

―The Power: Description of the rules and requirements for
correct, effective use of Witchcraft
―The Tools: How to make, consecrate and use magickal
instruments
―The Language: Includes diagrams of the lost Theban script and
Runic alphabet
―The Rituals: Complete instructions for performing rituals for
every purpose
―The Recipes: The famous secret herbal lore of the Craft, including ointments, teas, incense,
perfumes and oils
―The Dances: Traditional square dances as well as magickal "Witches' rounds"
―The Book of Shadows: The Holy Book of Witchcraft
―The Eightfold Path: Describes the steps to magickal attainment.

First published in 1974, this ground-breaking volume includes essential information for practicing Wiccans. Llewellyn is proud to present this hardcover edition to celebrate our company's one hundred year anniversary.

Natural Magic. Doreen Valiente. Gardnerian Wicca. Witchcraft

Doreen Valiente was initiated by Gerald Gardner in 1953 and is responsible for writing much of the early material pertaining to Gardnerian Wicca. "Natural Magic" is an enjoyable and informative book by her, published in 1975.

Magic is all around us - in stones, flowers, stars, the dawn wind and the sunset cloud. All we need is the ability to see it, understand it, and apply it. Natural Magic explains how to practise the age-old white magic that village wise women have used for centuries. It deals with the magic of herbs and flowers, of the four elements, of numbers and colours, amulets and talismans, how to read cards, how to interpret dreams, and much more. There are chapters on the secrets of sex magic, and on the use of traditional spells. If you want to learn to charm warts, to cast a love spell, or to plant a magical garden, this book will tell you how. An essentially practical treatise, which sets out to show how magic can be for everyone, and how, indeed, it has always been inherent in human life and nature. Both those who are new to the practice of magic and those with experience will find it delightful reading and an informative handbook for use in daily life.

Doreen Valiente remains, simply, the most influential woman in the world of modern Witchcraft. Her fame and achievements are only surpassed by her popularity and respect among the world's Pagan community. Uniquely personable, especially in her writings, she left a legacy far deeper than the mere material, however her material legacy does remain and lies in the care of the Doreen Valiente Foundation, a charitable organisation with ambitions to share, celebrate, research and preserve her legacy.

The Gardnerian Book of Shadows. Gerald Gardner. Wicca. Witchcraft

The Gardnerian Book of Shadows. Gerald Gardner. Wicca. Witchcraft
The Gardnerian Book of Shadows. Gerald Gardner. Wicca. Witchcraft

I've yet to find a nice hardbound version of Gerald Gardner's "Book of Shadows" (a bit surprising, considering it is an important Occult text), but this print on demand copy will suffice for study purposes.

The Gardnerian Book of Shadows contains Wicca rituals and pagan magical ceremonies; first published between 1948 and 1961, much of the contents herein constitutes a summation of Wiccan practice.

Paganism’s popularity blossomed in the mid-20th century, as more people curious of the rituals and ceremonies of religions and witches became involved in covens – clandestine groups of pagan practitioners. A standard set of instructions for rituals, celebrations and initiations was publicized, in order to ensure that groups disparate in location would correctly and authentically perform their duties as per tradition.

This book contains the complete Gardnerian texts, as compiled by Gerald E. Gardner, a leading practitioner of Wicca in England. Gardner’s writings are a suffusion of lore, drawing upon witchcraft rituals described in several books by authors such as Margaret Murray. An authoritative and thorough introduction to pagan ceremony; while no substitute for membership and participation in a coven, the reader may herein gain an impression of the witch-cult and its practices.

I made an interesting stop on my way out of Cleveland. One of the authors I enjoy, Raymond Buckland, passed away a few years ago and his personal collection of Occult artifacts is on display at the Buckland Museum of Witchcraft and Magick in Cleveland. There are objects pertaining to Buckland himself as well as items that belonged to Gerald Gardner, Aleister Crowley, Israel Regardie and others. Very cool, and run by a friendly staff.
