Directed by Zack Snyder, based on characters from DC Comics, Man of Steel (2013) added renewed energy and dark style to the Superman franchise and served as the first entry in the Justice League film series.

The plot is summarized: With the imminent destruction of Krypton, their home planet, Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and his wife seek to preserve their race by sending their infant son to Earth. The child's spacecraft lands at the farm of Jonathan (Kevin Costner) and Martha (Diane Lane) Kent, who name him Clark and raise him as their own son. Though his extraordinary abilities have led to the adult Clark (Henry Cavill) living on the fringe of society, he finds he must become a hero to save those he loves from a dire threat.

The cast is great, including Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane.

Open Range (2003): Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall and Annette Bening

Directed by and starring Kevin Costner, Open Range (2003) is a great Western that sparks with realism and true feeling. The film deservedly won critical acclaim. The story concerns two cattlemen who are forced to battle a villainous land baron and his henchmen. Brutal violence and poignant sentiments mix nicely, the film is entertaining throughout. The cinematography nicely captures the vast and beautiful Western landscape in a limited palette. Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall and Annette Bening are great in the lead roles, The supporting cast is great as well, including Michael Gambon, Diego Luna and Michael Jeter (in his final role).

Dances With Wolves (1990): Kevin Costner

With beautiful cinematography, Dances With Wolves (1990) ranks among the greatest photographic attempts to capture the luminous Western landscape in all of Art. I know one of the camera men that worked on the "buffalo hunt" scenes and he cited his work in this film as the pinnacle of his career. Everyone who worked on Dances With Wolves deserves to be proud, it is a magnificent achievement. It snagged a bunch of Oscars that year including Best Picture and Best Director for Kevin Costner, for whom this film was a labor of love. It revitalized interest in Westerns and Native American themes and consistently places high on the AFI's list of the greatest films of all time. It is a true Gem, a modern Classic.
