To Hell and Back (1955): Audie Murphy in World War II

Directed by Jesse Hibbs, based on Audie Murphy's autobiography of the same title, To Hell and Back (1955) both chronicles and dramatizes Murphy's real-life experiences in World War II. Being young and small, Audie Murphy attempts to enlist in the Marines and Navy but is turned down and directed towards Army service. In a relatively short time, Murphy goes through numerous battles, killing more than 240 enemy soldiers and conducting himself with such bravery that he is awarded with every honor the country can bestow... including the Congressional Medal of Honor. Audie Murphy is superb in his most memorable role, playing himself. The supporting cast does a fine job as well. A true WWII Classic.
