Proctor's Ledge. Execution Site. Gallows Hill. Salem, Massachusetts. 1692 Salem Witch Trials

I paid a somber visit to the site of the 1692 Salem Witch hangings.

It was only five years ago, in 2016, that a team of scholars were able to verify that this slope and rock outcropping were the actual site where 19 people were executed in 1692 for Witchcraft. The site and small memorial are on the outskirts of Salem and is known as Proctor's Ledge. It is located behind a Walgreen's and in between two private homes.

I spent the morning exploring the circa 1678 Homestead of Rebecca Nurse, the only home of a Salem Witchcraft Trials victim that is open to the public. It is located in old Salem Village (the town later changed its name to Danvers).

The Scarlet Letter (1995): Demi Moore, Gary Oldman and Robert Duvall

Directed by Roland Joffe, "freely adapted" from the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter (1995) brings the Classic tale of forbidden love to life in passionate style. Set in 1667, the story concerns a woman in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, who commits adultery with the town preacher and bears his child… causing her to face dire consequences and be ostracized by the townsfolk. Wonderful attention to historic detail is apparent in the 17th Century sets and costumes. The cast does a great job all-around, including Demi Moore, Gary Oldman and Robert Duvall.

The Crucible (1996): Winona Ryder, Daniel Day-Lewis and the 1692 Salem Witch Trials

Directed by Nicholas Hytner, and written by Arthur Miller (based on his own classic 1953 play), The Crucible (1996) is an allegory of 1950's McCarthyism and the related blacklist. Set in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts Colony, the semi-fictionalized story focuses on the mania and paranoia surrounding the unfounded witchcraft accusations and wrongful hangings during the infamous Salem Witch Trials. After young harlot Abigail Williams and a group of young girls are caught enacting a ritualized dance in the woods by the local Reverend, all hell breaks loose… and a demonic examination/inquisition is called, with petty grievances leading to false accusations amongst the Salem townsfolk looking to save themselves from the noose. Wonderful set and costume design shows careful attention to 17th Century historic detail. Daniel Day-Lewis is great as John Proctor. Winona Ryder is enchanting as Abigail Williams, the source of the witch-mania. The supporting cast is good as well, including Paul Scofield, Jeffrey Jones, Rob Campbell and Joan Allen.
