8 Women (2002): Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Beart and Ludivine Sagnier

Based on the 1972 play "Huit Femmes" by Robert Thomas, "8 Women" or 8 Femmes (2002) was co-written and directed by Francois Ozon. Original in it's look and feel, Ozon was very much inspired by the films of the 1950's, particularly the costumes, and he hired designer Pascaline Chavanne to concoct a diverse wardrobe for the characters. A cinematic feast for the eyes, the film is beautiful and vibrant in every regard. Combining comedy, murder-mystery and musical elements, 8 Femmes manages to maintain a cohesive feel throughout. The cast is astounding, with some of the greatest French actresses, both old and young, gracing the same screen... including Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Beart, Danielle Darrieux, Ludivine Sagnier, Isabelle Huppert and Virginie Ledoyen.
At an affluent Country house in the 1950's, while preparing for Christmas, the lives of the servants and family alike are thrown into turmoil when the master of the house, Marcel, is found dead in his bed, with a knife in his back. The culprit must be one of the eight women present...

La Belle Noiseuse (1991): Emmanuelle Beart

Directed by Jacques Rivette, loosely based on a novel by Honore de Balzac, La Belle Noiseuse (1991) is perhaps the most thorough cinematic look at the artistic process, and the relationship between artist and model, ever filmed. It won the coveted Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1991. The title, translated to English, roughly means "The Beautiful Troublemaker". Clocking in at nearly 4 hours long, the story follows the whole artistic process as an aging painter seeks to find the ideal beauty in the nude form of a young woman. Emmanuelle Beart is nude for the majority of the film, with much attention given to her womanly figure... and she is incredibly beautiful, epitomizing the ideal that the artist is looking for. Michel Piccoli is great as the artist. La Belle Noiseuse is a truly remarkable achievement.

Mission: Impossible (1996): Tom Cruise and a Secret Agent Heist

Directed by Brian De Palma, based on the television series, Mission: Impossible (1996) brought the popular spy franchise up to speed with a bigger budget and dazzling special effects. The espionage story concerns Ethan Hunt, an IMF operative, who is framed for the murders of his team after a sabotaged mission goes wrong… and the dizzying lengths he is willing to go in an effort to uncover the truth. The daring heist Ethan Hunt performs on the CIA headquarters is elegant and acrobatic, in a now-famous scene in which he stealthily suspends from a ventilation shaft to hack a computer in a highly-secure vault. Explosions, chases and shootouts abound. Tom Cruise is great in the lead role, showing proper amounts of cleverness and bravado. French actress Emmanuelle Beart is beautiful in her role. The supporting cast is good as well, including Jon Voight, Jean Reno, Ving Rhames, Emilio Estevez and Vanessa Redgrave.
