The Keys to the Gateway of Magic. Dr Stephen Skinner. David Rankine. Occult. Grimoire |
I'm reading through "The Keys to the Gateway of Magic: Summoning the Solomonic Archangels and Demon Princes." Edited by Dr. Stephen Skinner and David Rankine.
This classic text of the Nine Great Keys details the invocation of the Archangels, the full hierarchy of spiritual beings (including Olympic Spirits and Elementals) and the evocation of the four Demon Princes.
Highly sought-after, this edition of a rare early seventeenth century grimioire has never before appeared in English. Occult scholar Stephen Skinner, along with magician and author David Rankine, trace the history of the Keys and offer full transcriptions of four key seventeenth century manuscripts in the British Library and in the Bodleian Library.

The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses. Grimoire. Magick. Edited by Joseph H. Peterson |
I'm reading through "The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses" grimoire edited by Joseph H. Peterson...
For people interested in folk magic. The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses, arguably one of the most popular magick books ever published, contains two secret apocrypha ascribed to Moses, perhaps pseudepigraphically. The book consists of a collection of texts, which claim to explain the magick Moses used to win the biblical magick contest with the Egyptian priest-magicians, part the Red Sea, and perform other miraculous feats. It includes instruction in the form of invocations, magick words, and seals for calling upon the angels to affect worldly ends, from the sublime (calling down a plague of locusts and frogs upon your enemy) to the mundane (getting more money). Many manuscripts and printed pamphlet versions circulated in Germany in the 1800s, and an English translation by Johann Scheible first appeared in New York in 1880 that had not been corrected or re-edited until now. In creating this restored, corrected edition, Joseph Peterson drew on Scheible's final edition of the text and his original sources. It will be of great interest to those who have suffered through prior editions and anyone looking for a traditional source of Western magick. * Used in various modern traditions of American folk magick, from Pennsylvania Dutch hexmeisters and contemporary eclectic magicians, to voodoo practitioners and African American root workers. * Updated or fresh translations from original German, Latin, and Hebrew sources and restoration of censored or left out passages in earlier editions and 35 pages of text never before translated. * Describes the biblical magick ascribed to Moses and its application. * Extensively illustrated with over 100 magical seals, signs, and sigils.

The Lesser Key of Solomon. Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis. Grimoire. Joseph H. Peterson |
I'm reading through Joseph H. Peterson's edition of "The Lesser Key of Solomon."
A widely respected scholar and archivist of occult texts, Peterson goes to great length to establish the provenance of each part of The Lessor Key of Solomon, and possible derivative works, including critical analyses of all major variations, utilizing fresh translations of earlier magical texts such as Johann Trithemius's Steganographia, The Archidoxes of Magic by Paracelsus, and newly discovered Hebrew manuscripts of the original Key of Solomon.
Abundantly illustrated, Peterson includes reproductions of the original magical circles, tools, and seals of the spirits with variations of certain drawings from various sources and notae missing from earlier editions.
This definitive edition of The Lesser Key of Solomon includes:
- Goetia—The ritual invocation of evil spirits and Solomons devices for binding them
Theurgia Goetia—Continues the study of spirits that are “partly good and partly evil”
Ars Paulina—Outlines the good spirits or angles governing the hours of the day and the signs of the zodiac. The text is purported to have been discovered by the Apostle Paul after he had been snatched up to heaven and includes “The Conjuration of the Holy Guardian Angel.”
Ars Almadel—attributed to an Arab of the same name, this text describes twenty beneficial sprits that govern the zodiac
Ars Notoria—With roots that go back to the 13th century Latin manuscripts, and probably even early oral traditions, this collection of orations and prayers in interspersed with magical words said to have mystical properties that can impart communion with God and knowledge of divine and human arts and sciences.
Appendices, which include addenda found in the Sloan Manuscript 2731, Johan Weyer’s Psuedomonarchia demonum

777 and Other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley. Magick. Occult. Thelema |
"777 and Other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley" is a useful book of correspondences.
Gematria provides essential explanations of theoretical and practical Qabalistic number analysis and philosophy. “An Essay in Number,” also included, provides invaluable insights into key numbers as well as techniques and safeguards for practical magical work. Gematria was first published in The Equinox, vol. 1. no. 5.
777 itself contains, in concise tabulated form, an overview of symbolism of the major world religions, as well as the system of correspondence of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. In short, it is a complete magical and philosophical dictionary—a key to all religion and practical occultism—an amazing work whose value has been recognized through many editions since its first appearance in 1909 and subsequent enlargement in 1955.
The third text in this collection is Sepher Sephiroth, a unique dictionary listing hundreds of Hebrew words arranged by numerical value. It was compiled jointly by Aleister Crowley and Allan Bennett and first appeared in The Equinox, vol. 1, no. 8.

A Magical Education. Talks on Magic and Occultism. John Michael Greer |
I'm enjoying "A Magical Education" by John Michael Greer
An extraordinary exploration of the forgotten history of the esoteric and its unexpected possibilities in our time.
In these talks, written and presented to a variety of audiences between 2001 and 2010, John Michael Greer explores the forgotten history of occultism and its unexpected possibilities in our time.
From practical methods of occult training to the politics and metapolitics of magic, from the shadowy world of Victorian sex magic to the alchemy of initiatory ritual, from the complex origins of modern Neopaganism to the approaching twilight of Neopagan pop culture and what comes next, the talks collected in this book seek to inspire curiosity and reflection, not to set out an ironclad case for this or that point of view.
This book is an extraordinary insight into the life and work of a working magician and occultist.

The Red Dragon. The Grand Grimoire. Black Letter Press. Occult. Ceremonial Magick
![]() |
The Red Dragon. The Grand Grimoire. Black Letter Press. Occult. Ceremonial Magick |
I picked up a Black Letter Press edition of "The Red Dragon" at Splendor Solis Books in Northampton, Massachusetts.
The Grand Grimoire is a foundational book of magic from the 19th
century. This translation is the most accurate ever, and is presented
with parallel French & English text. A comprehensive introduction
covers the development of magic, the history of the grimoire, the witch
trials & the Inquisition, the themes & key insights, and much
more. The complete translation of a contemporary novel that provides
relevant social context to the grimoire is also included. The foreword
is by noted author and occultist Baal Kadmon.
This edition
incorporates the seals and images of the spirits of the Grand Grimoire,
many never seen before. This will aid the magician in concentration and
visualization of the spirits, so that they may be evoked for practical
purposes. The grimoire describes the process of evoking and making pacts
with Lucifuge Rofocale, the 'Infernal Prime Minister," who is above the
hierarchy of twenty-six other spirits in this book. The grimoire also
contains a process of necromancy and a collection of spells.
This
is a comprehensive resource for scholars, occultists, practicing
magicians, witches and wizards. It is a valuable work both for its
historical value, and its magical use. Our introduction contains notes
on the various items used in the Grimoire, such as the herb Verbena, the
Bloodstone, the Blasting Rod, and the Magic Circle. We have identified
the actual items referenced in the Grimoire, which will be a significant
leap in scholarship and magical practice, and we believe, give this
grimoire a reestablished significance in occult circles.
While
numerous translations exist, as this book is in the public domain, we
have not found any translations that have rigorously researched the
terms and translated all parts of the content, from the interspersed
Latin, Greek and the base French text. The authors are practicing
magicians and researchers.
From the Foreword by Baal Kadmon, "The
beauty of this translation is not only its accuracy, but also that it
is in a clear interlinear format. This provides the reader with the
opportunity to see the original text, side-by-side with the English
translation, something that does not exist in any other edition of this
text. This alone is an invaluable benefit to the reader. However, this
is not a mere translation of the text. It is also groundbreaking in its
scholarship. For centuries, certain items mentioned in the text were a
mystery. Aaman and Arundell were able to decipher them, which is a
historic achievement unto itself.Due to the nature of The Grand
Grimoire, accuracy should be of the utmost importance to any Magician
and Sorcerer who wishes to delve into the secrets and powers of this
text. You, the reader, can rest assured that this is by far the most
accurate rendition of this text to-date.I am confident that this book
will be referenced for many years to come. I know I will certainly refer
to it time and time again as I further my own research on the subject
of Solomonic Magic."

The Dark Lord. H.P. Lovecraft, Kenneth Grant and the Typhonian Tradition in Magic. Peter Levenda |
I'm keeping with a H.P. Lovecraft theme and reading "The Dark Lord" by Peter Levenda.
One of the most famous - yet least understood - manifestations of Thelemic thought has been the works of Kenneth Grant, the British occultist and one-time intimate of Aleister Crowley, who discovered a hidden world within the primary source materials of Crowley's Aeon of Horus. Using complementary texts from such disparate authors as H.P. Lovecraft, Jack Parsons, Austin Osman Spare, and Charles Stansfeld Jones ("Frater Achad"), Grant formulated a system of magic that expanded upon that delineated in the rituals of the OTO: a system that included elements of Tantra, of Voudon, and in particular that of the Schlangekraft recension of the Necronomicon, all woven together in a dark tapestry of power and illumination.
The Dark Lord follows the themes in the writings of Kenneth Grant, H.P. Lovecraft, and the Necronomicon, uncovering further meanings of the concepts of the famous writers of the Left Hand Path. It is for Thelemites, as well as lovers of the Lovecraft Mythos in all its forms, and for those who find the rituals of classical ceremonial magic inadequate for the New Aeon.
Traveling through the worlds of religion, literature, and the occult, Peter Levenda takes his readers on a deeply fascinating exploration on magic, evil, and The Dark Lord as he investigates of one of the most neglected theses in the history of modern occultism: the nature of the Typhonian Current and its relationship to Aleister Crowley's Thelema and H.P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon.

Necronomicon. Grimoire. Simon. Peter Levenda. H.P. Lovecraft. Cthulhu Mythos |
I'm keeping with a H.P. Lovecraft theme and reading the "Necronomicon"
"This is the testimony of all that I have seen, and all that I have learned. . . . For this is the Book of the Dead, the Book of the Black Earth, that I have writ down at the peril of my life..."
The classic and controversial grimoire—a book of magic, spells, and rituals, ready to be incorporated into your life
Since its initial publication in 1977, there has been a lot of ink spilled on the subject of the Necronomicon. Some have derided it as a clumsy hoax, while others have praised it as a powerful spell book. As the decades have passed, more information has come to light both on the book's origins and discovery, and on the information contained within its pages. Regardless of its origins, the Necronomicon has been found to contain formulae for spiritual transformation consistent with some of the most ancient mystical processes in the world—processes that were not public knowledge when the book was first published, processes that involve communion with the stars.
Despite the controversy, the first edition sold out before it was published—and it has never been out of print in the decades since then. If this book or the arcane practices that it claims to illuminate have ever piqued your interest, then wait no longer, and discover the truths that the Necronomicon has in store for you and the impact that it can have on your life.

Arbatel. Concerning the Magic of the Ancients. Occult. Grimoire. Joseph H. Peterson |
I'm enjoying "Arbatel: Concerning the Magic of the Ancient" edited by Joseph H. Peterson.
In many ways, Arbatel is unique among texts on magic. Unlike the vast majority of writings, it is clear, concise, and elegantly written. The practical instructions are straightforward and undemanding. When it first appeared in 1575, it attracted the attention of people with a surprisingly broad range of agendas, including some of the finest minds of the time. Often quoted and reprinted, both praised and condemned, its impact on western esoteric philosophy has been called "overwhelming."
Arbatel's magic is full of wonder and free from the sinister elements usually associated with texts on the subject. But it is about more than magic; filled with gnomic wisdom, it urges us to help our neighbors, be positive and grateful, and use time wisely. Above all, it teaches us to pay attention, looking for the wondrous and miraculous. In fact, to the author this virtually defines the magus.
* Included are illustrations, bibliography, index, and original Latin text.
* First English translation published since in 1655.
