The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001): Woody Allen, Charlize Theron and Helen Hunt

Like many of Woody Allen's films, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001) received decidedly mixed reviews upon it's release... and now, over a decade later, audiences are finally beginning to appreciate it for the wonderful film that it is. The strengths in The Curse of the Jade Scorpion are subtle, yet indelible. The 1940's period sense is impeccable, with great eye for detail. Great thought was also given to the development of the archetypal personas of the three main female characters... all drawn from typical characters from 1940's films. Charlize Theron is the sexy, uninhibited femme-fatale pin-up. Elizabeth Berkely is the stereotypical bubbly office ditz. Helen Hunt is the wisecracking, no-nonsense dame. Woody Allen is also in top comedic form as the male lead. With a good supporting cast including Dan Aykroyd, Wallace Shawn and David Ogden Stiers, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion is an underrated Gem worthy of more attention.
C.W. Briggs (Woody Allen) is an insurance investigator with a strong record of solved cases, making him a mild hero around the office...

especially with Jill (Elizabeth Berkely), the hot office secretary...

Briggs does not impress Betty Ann Fitzgerald (Helen Hunt), an efficiency expert, however. The two despise each other, with Fitzgerald viewing Briggs as an antiquated worm, and Briggs seeing her as an uptight shrew. Betty Ann Fitzgerald is a paradox, however, for despite outward appearances, she is having an illicit affair with their boss, Chris Magruder (Dan Aykroyd)...

The Curse of the Jade Scorpion. 2001: Helen Hunt

A comedic turn happens at an office outing, when Briggs and Fitzgerald are picked to be hypnotized by Voltan (David Ogden Stiers)...

Unbeknownst to all present, Voltan now has both Briggs and Fitzgerald under his power, and uses them to commit jewel heists at carefully chosen times. The crimes are mysterious, because neither has any recollection of anything, and Briggs is assigned to investigate. Naturally, he suspects Fitzgerald, and vice versa...

Meanwhile, Briggs is being seduced by the sexy and sensuous, beautiful socialite, Laura Kensington (Charlize Theron)...

Briggs and Fitzgerald's awkward hatred and suspicion is translating to love. When Briggs is arrested for the robberies, he turns to her for help. With confusion all around...

something has to give in order to release the two from Voltan's power...

Zelig (1983): Woody Allen

Written and directed by Woody Allen, Zelig (1983) was a technically innovative landmark in cinema, created a generation before it's time. Using blue screen shots, Woody Allen was able to insert himself into vintage film footage alongside historic figures. Old cameras and sound equipment were used, and Allen and his cinematographer, Gordon Willis, added spots, scratches, crinkles and distress marks by hand to give an authentic feel. They accomplished this more than a decade before CGI effects became commonplace, making such effects easier to do. In Zelig, Woody Allen plays a "human chameleon" that involuntarily changes his physical appearance in order to be accepted by those around him in the 1920's. Shot in documentary style, the film is a riveting masterpiece. Mia Farrow is great in her supporting role. Historic figures portrayed include Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Charles Lindbergh, Al Capone, William Randolph Hearst, Charlie Chaplin, Bobby Jones, Josephine Baker, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Carole Lombard, Tom Mix, James Cagney, Pope Pius XI and Adolf Hitler.

Manhattan (1979): Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Mariel Hemingway and Meryl Streep

Co-written, directed by and starring Woody Allen, Manhattan (1979) further spanned the bridge between comedy and drama. Woody Allen, himself, described Manhattan as a cross between his previous two films, the comedy Annie Hall (1977) and the drama Interiors (1978). Shot in beautiful black & white cinematography, New York City shines throughout with a delectable George Gershwin soundtrack playing along. The story focuses on a 42-year-old man with two failed marriages behind him, who is dating a 17-year-old girl, but drifts away and finds new love with his best friend's mistress. The cast is great, including Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Mariel Hemingway, Meryl Streep, Wallace Shawn, Michael Murphy and Anne Byrne.

Stardust Memories (1980): Woody Allen, Charlotte Rampling and Sharon Stone

Written and directed by Woody Allen, Stardust Memories (1980) is amongst the few films that Allen himself considers to be his best work. With intermixed drama and comedy, the plot concerns a filmmaker who reminisces about past romances while attending a retrospective of his own work. Many elements of the film mirror Woody Allen's own feelings at the time, as his career progressed. The black and white cinematography is beautiful and the cast is great, including Woody Allen, Charlotte Rampling, Tony Roberts, Jessica Harper, Marie-Christine Barrault and Sharon Stone in a brief early role (as a smiling girl on a train).

Sleeper (1973): Woody Allen and Diane Keaton

Written and directed by Woody Allen, Sleeper (1973) showcases Allen's early near-slapstick style in it's finest form. Part Marx Brothers, part Charlie Chaplin, but all Woody Allen... the film depicts the strange circumstances faced by a health food store owner who was cryogenically frozen in 1973 and defrosted 200 years later into a weird future Dystopia. Woody Allen and Diane Keaton co-star, displaying the great on-screen chemistry for which their work together is famous.
