I'm enjoying "The Freemasons Key: Masonic Symbolism" edited by Michael R. Poll.

Symbolism is the language of Freemasonry. But what is symbolism? Why does Masonry use it? Who else has used symbolism? From the powerful pens of Albert Mackey, Joseph Fort Newton, Oliver Day Street, H. L. Haywood and more comes a wide selection of papers on the symbolic nature of Freemasonry, the Masonic method of teaching, as well as explaining the symbolism of the Masonic degrees. This is an indispensable work for anyone seeking to better understand Freemasonry and its practices.

The History of Freemasonry. Albert Mackey

The History of Freemasonry. Albert Mackey
The History of Freemasonry. Albert Mackey

I'm enjoying "The History of Freemasonry" by Albert G. Mackey.

The fraternal order of Freemasons has been a mysterious organization since its origins centuries ago. Many historical figures such as Voltaire, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin were Freemasons and made the society all the more intriguing. This classic text illuminates the society's origins as well as the philosophical and ritual foundations on which it is built. Readers can explore the mythical tales about Freemasonry and learn how they relate to the historical truth. Included are excerpts from rare sacred documents along with explanations of their significance, plus black and white illustrations.

"Cryptic Masonry: A Manual of the Council" by Albert G. Mackey

Cryptic Masonry
A Manual of The Council
by Albert G. Mackey
Originally published in 1897
Notes by Travis Simpkins

Masonic Books related to the Cryptic Council Degrees of the York Rite are few and far between. Thankfully, Cryptic Masonry: A Manual for The Council by Albert Mackey exists and presents the groundwork for the degrees of Royal Master, Select Master and Super-Excellent Master. A section on various other ceremonies of the Order are included as well. The sections are set up in the same manner as Mackey's The Book of the Chapter which focused on the Royal Arch Degrees.

Some highlights of Albert Mackey's interpretations of the Cryptic Degrees:

Royal Master: The degree presents one great idea- the truly Masonic one- of the laborer seeking for his reward… Divine Truth- the knowledge of God- concealed in the old Cabalistic doctrine, under the symbol of his Ineffable Name, and typified in the Masonic systems under the mystical expression of the True Word, is the reward proposed to every mason who has faithfully wrought his task. It is, in short, the "Master's Wages." … but the temple that he has been building is the temple of this life… and in this first temple the truth cannot be found.

Select Master: Focuses on two virtues: Secrecy and Silence. Select Masters work in secrecy and silence that they may prepare and preserve the sacred deposits of truth until the time shall come for its full revelation. And so should all men do, working now, yet not for the present time alone, but that their labor may bring forth fruit in the future; laboring here amid the foundations of the first temple of this transient life, that when their hours of work are finished on earth, the deeds which they have done may be brought to light, and the reward be bestowed in the second temple of eternal life.

Super-Excellent Master: It's legend and ceremonies are intended to inculcate that important Masonic virtue, fidelity to vows… set forth in the lecture as a great moral lesson, whose object is to warn the recipient of the fatal effects that will ensue from a violation of his sacred obligations.

"The Book of the Chapter: Royal Arch Freemasonry" by Albert G. Mackey

The Book of the Chapter
by Albert G. Mackey
originally published, 1858
Notes by Travis Simpkins

For students of the York Rite, Albert Mackey's The Book of the Chapter or Monitorial Instructions in the Degrees of Mark, Past and Most Excellent Master and the Holy Royal Arch has long been an essential text and a mainstay Classic. Divided into sections, each presents a Symbolical Design, Historical Summary and Analysis of a particular Chapter Degree. Full of useful information, some highlights include:

Mark Master: "If the Fellow Craft's degree is devoted to the inculcation of learning, that of Mark Master is intended to instruct us how that learning can most usefully and judiciously be employed for our own honor and the profit of others."

Past Master: "While, as Masons, we admit the general equality of men in their relationship to their common Creator… we do not deny the advantage and propriety of distinctions in society, based on a difference in talent, virtue and position; and we know that while some must rule and govern, others of necessity must be called upon to obey. It is to this of the gradations of society that the 5th Degree alludes in its ceremonies and instructions."

Most Excellent Master: " The Master Mason degree is intended, in its symbolic design, to teach the doctrines of the resurrection of the dead and the immortality of the soul. But this corruption can only be put on incorruption, and this mortal put on immorality by a passage through the portals of the grave. And here the degree of Most Excellent Master comes forward with its beautiful symbolism, to represent the man prepared to enter upon that eventful passage."

Holy Royal Arch: "The great object of pursuit in Masonry- the scope and tendency of all its investigations- is TRUTH. This is the goal to which all Masonic labor evidently ends. Sought for in every degree, and constantly approached, but never thoroughly and intimately embraced, at length, in the Royal Arch, the veils which concealed the object of search from our view are withdrawn, and the inestimable prize is revealed."
