Freemasonry on the Frontier. Quatuor Coronati Lodge. Masonic Research. Colonial America

Freemasonry on the Frontier. Quatuor Coronati Lodge. Masonic Research. Colonial America
Freemasonry on the Frontier. Quatuor Coronati Lodge. Masonic Research. Colonial America

"Freemasonry on the Frontier" was published in 2020. I contributed a portrait of Rob Morris to the essay about him (page 86), so I had already read that particular section a long while ago. I'm just now finding a spare bit of time to read through some of the other essays.

A collection of seventeen original papers by leading Masonic researchers and academics tracking the evolution of Freemasonry in America from the original thirteen colonies to the Pacific Coast. Contributors include Ric Berman, Brent Morris, Mike Kearsley, Barry Hoffbrand, John Wade, Adam Kendall, and Andreas Önnerfors, members of Quatuor Coronati Lodge, and a number of outstanding American scholars: Ben Williams, Hilary Anderson Stelling, Hans Schwartz ,John Kyle Day, Jeffrey Croteau, Andrew Hammer, Daniel Gardiner, and Walter H. Hunt, as well as two brilliant European writers, Peter Lanchidi from Israel and Leif Endre Grutle from Norway.

The Perfect Ceremonies of Craft Masonry and the Holy Royal Arch. Masonic Book Club. Arturo de Hoyos, 33°, GC and S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC

I am, of course, accustomed to the wording of the Preston-Webb ritual used in most Jurisdictions of the United States. But, I have been enjoying this English "Emulation Lodge" ritual. Some interesting differences.

The Perfect Ceremonies of Craft Masonry and the Holy Royal Arch was the 2021 selection of the Masonic Book Club. It also features some pretty cool portraits of the editors by yours truly (Arturo de Hoyos, 33°, GC and S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC).

Introduction by Arturo de Hoyos, 33°, GC, and S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC. Volume 42 of the Masonic Book Club, whose purpose is to publish classic Masonic books and support Scottish Rite, SJ, USA Philanthropies.

This is a book for the student of Masonic ritual. In 1813 the "Antients" and "Moderns" Grand Lodges merged to form the current United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE). Over the next two years the new Grand Lodge worked to produce a form of ritual with elements from both groups. Although the ritual wasn't officially transcribed, the founders of the "Emulation Lodge of Improvement" were among those who witnessed the new ritual. While not used today, The Perfect Ceremonies are the lineal ancestors of the official Emulation ritual, lectures, and the installation ceremony for officers. Also included is a contemporary version of the Royal Arch Degree, which completes the "pure ancient Masonry" of the UGLE. This special printing reproduces the first editions of these works, and includes a rare insert which was privately distributed. Engravings by Hans Holbein enhance the pages.

Hardbound (5"x7"), marbled covers, satin ribbon, rubricated title pages, and index. 392 pages.

Scottish Rite Journal. Sept/Oct 2021. Supreme Council, 33°, SJ. Chips from the Quarry. Art by Travis Simpkins

The latest issue of the Scottish Rite Journal (September/October, 2021) was just published.

My regular contribution of “Chips from the Quarry” is on page 16. This one focuses on Bestselling authors and Freemasonry. The text was written by S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC.

This issue is also my first byline as a 33° (cool to see it in print)

Travis Simpkins Joins Scottish Rite Journal as Artist for "Chips from the Quarry"

Scottish Rite Journal. July/August 2021. Chips from the Quarry. Art by Travis Simpkins

Earlier this year, S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC offered me a regular spot in the Scottish Rite Journal, taking over the long-running “Chips from the Quarry” feature in the magazine (the previous artist, a Brother from Canada, has retired). The first issue to include my artwork (July/August 2021) was just published. Each “Chips from the Quarry” feature will have a different theme, this one is about Clergymen who were Masons.

It’s always a pleasure to help out and work with my friends in the Southern Jurisdiction. I have enjoyed the SJ’s various publications since becoming a Mason. I’ve contributed artwork to the Scottish Rite Research Society’s periodicals and the newly revived Masonic Book Club. It will be a fun adventure to be involved with the Scottish Rite Journal as well.

Happy Retirement to S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC. Scottish Rite Journal. Portrait by Travis Simpkins

Over the past 5 years, I’ve had the pleasure to work with S. Brent Morris, 33°, GC on several projects. I consider it a great privilege that my time as a Mason has coincided with that of a man so knowledgeable and dedicated to the Craft. Best wishes to Brent on his retirement from the Supreme Council, 33°, SJ!

It’s not farewell, though. I’m looking forward to more collaborations with Brent in future post-retirement endeavors.

S. Brent Morris. Books. A Radical in the East. Why Thirty-Three?

S. Brent Morris. Books. A Radical in the East. Why Thirty-Three?
S. Brent Morris. Books. A Radical in the East. Why Thirty-Three?

When I'm asked for Masonic book recommendations, these are the two books I most often suggest.
Just my personal preference. There's such a wide range of Masonic topics between the two and I find S. Brent Morris' writing style to be relatable and engaging. (He's also a very helpful person and a pleasure to work with for Scottish Rite publications).

The "Why Thirty-Three?" book is readily available through Amazon. The other book, "A Radical in the East", might be a bit harder to find.

"The papers presented here represent over twenty-five years of publications by S. Brent Morris. They explore his many questions about Freemasonry, usually dealing with origins of the Craft. What “high degrees” were in the United States before 1830? What were the activities in the United States before 1801 of the Order of the Royal Secret, the precursor of the Scottish Rite? How did American grand lodges form as they broke away from England? Who were the Gormogons; how did they get started; what happened to them? Why does the Scottish Rite have thirty-three degrees?A complex organization with a lengthy pedigree like Freemasonry has many basic foundational questions waiting to be answered, and that’s what this book does: answers questions.S. Brent Morris, 33°, Grand Cross, is Managing Editor of the Scottish Rite Journal, the largest circulation Masonic magazine in the world. He retired after twenty-five years as a mathematician with the federal government and has taught at Duke, Johns Hopkins, and George Washington Universities. He is Past Master of Patmos Lodge No. 70, Ellicott City, Maryland, and Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076, London; a Fellow and Mackey Scholar of the Scottish Rite Research Society; a Fellow of the Philalethes Society; an honorary Fellow of the Phylaxis Society; founding Editor of Heredom, the transactions of the Scottish Rite Research Society; indexer of Ars Quatuor Coronatorum; and Past Grand Abbot of the Society of Blue Friars. He is the author of Magic Tricks, Card Shuffling, and Dynamic Computer Memories; two U.S. patents; nine technical articles; and is author or editor of over forty books on Freemasonry including Complete Idiot’s Guide to Freemasonry and Is It True What They Say About Freemasonry? (with Arturo de Hoyos)."
